Everything You Need To Know About Yoni Eggs And Crystal Dildos

by BUST Magazine

What’s the deal with yoni eggs and crystal dildos? Are they actually safe to use internally? I also worry about yoni eggs getting stuck, even if they have a string attached.

Sexologist Carol Queen: If you do a Google search for the phrase “yoni egg,” you’ll find tons of claims about what they’ll do for your pelvic floor and your spirituality. There are plenty of pelvic floor products, many made of or covered with silicone, and these are superior items as far as cleaning and body safety are concerned. However, if you’re so inclined, you might prefer a jade egg or a Chakrub brand stone dildo to one of the prosaic, if good quality, items available at a sex toy store or website.

If you believe in the healing properties of crystals and materials that come from the earth, and this makes you feel better about focusing on your vagina and getting conscious of its sensations, the metaphysical stone has worked its magic. For some people, an overlay of spirituality really does matter; if nothing else, this may help counteract horrible denials of female sexuality and strength found in some ostensibly spiritual places.

In general, many users find that their egg’s weight plus the law of gravity is enough to pull it down and out of the vagina whether they want it to exit or not! Using a string is good, as is using enough lube to prevent a seal from forming. Many balls are built with a hole to accommodate the string so you can change it; I’d recommend you do so with every use, though this begs the question of how to clean the holes themselves. I’d personally cover it with a condom; stone can have micro-cracks that might not be able to be seen or felt. Wash your egg or stone dildo after each use (not with alcohol), don’t try to insert an egg of a diameter that doesn’t feel comfortable, and avoid using crystal products if you have an IUD, though a stone dildo should be OK.

Don’t do all this because you think you have to for a healthy pelvic floor, though. You shouldn’t be using weights for PC exercises to begin with — at least, not as your only strategy. Enjoy the sensation and experience of eggs, balls, or barbells; work those yoni muscles like a goddess! But please realize that exercises that encourage holding a weight are fundamentally about tightening, and that can lead to muscle spasms, pain, and even vaginismus. Kegel exercises should be done by tightening and then relaxing, and neither tech-y pelvic floor trainers nor magical stones will help you with the second part of that equation.
