Domestic Abuse Victim Faces Up To 60 Years In Prison For Killing Her Abuser

by Danniah Daher

A Connecticut woman is accused of killing her ex-boyfriend by crushing him against a cement wall with her car.

The Huffington Post reports that Cherelle Baldwin, 21, of Bridgeport, Connecticut allegedly killed Jeffrey Brown, 24, after he attacked her on the morning of May 18th, 2013.

Baldwin relayed the attack to a jury, claiming that she accidentally killed Brown out of self-defense. According to Baldwin, after sending her a string of aggressive text messages, Brown broke into her home and proceeded to whip her with his belt before wrapping it around her neck, all while her 19-month-old baby cried nearby.

She went on to testify that after Brown attempted to strangle her, she ran from the house, leaving her baby crying in the bedroom, and got into her car. Brown followed and was walking around the car when Baldwin stepped on the gas and accelerated forward.

Police say Baldwin drove 100 feet into Brown, crushing him between the car and the cement wall at the rear of the garage. Police spokesman William Kaempffer says the impact pushed the wall back more than 10 inches.

Firefighters found a man’s black leather belt under his body.

“I didn’t mean to kill Jeffrey… Everything happened so quick. All I could think about was the baby,” she said.

Police don’t buy Baldwin’s story because of discrepancies between the physical evidence obtained and the story she told investigators—and the lack of visible injuries on her neck.

Her first trial resulted in a mistrial. If convicted, she could serve up to 60 years in prison.

According to Baldwin, Brown had previously slashed her tires, broken windows in her house, pulled her by her hair, strangled her, stolen her cellphone, and stalked her—all despite a restraining order.
