GEMS – Girls Education and Mentoring Services – is turning 10! That’s right, a whole decade of helping teenage girls of New York City who are victims of sexual exploitation and domestic trafficking. They’ve been offering outreach, intervention, court advocacy, therapy, development and education to young women affected by exploitation. GEMS has caught the attention of celebs like Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher, Ellen DeGeneres and Diddy (that’s his name this week, right?).
To celebrate their milestone year, GEMS will be hosting a 10th birthday party on May 8 from 6-10 pm at Bowery Poetry Club. The host will be GEMS volunteer Janice Erlbaum and feature readings from founder Rachel Lloyd as well as several GEMS girls. There will also be cupcakes and dancing with DJ Jools Palmer.
Details: Friday, March 8, 6-10PM, $10 donation suggested at the door. Bowery Poetry Club is located at 308 Bowery at First St. RSVP to janice.erlbaum@gmail.com — THE GUEST LIST WILL BE CLOSED WHEN IT REACHES CAPACITY. More at the GEMS website . There’s also a Facebook page for the event you can check out. -Liza
