Binge-Watch Alert! Tina Fey’s Amazeballs New Show ‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’ Debuts On Netflix Today!

by Emily Rems

The long, dark night of the soul known as life P3R (Post-30 Rock) is finally getting a little lighter today thanks to Netflix. The streaming service is now unveiling its latest original series, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and the show is everything a smart, lady-centric-comedy lover could hope for.

Created by the world’s greatest living human Tina Fey and her 30 Rock co-conspirator Robert Carlock, Kimmy stars BUST’s April/May cover gal Ellie Kemper (The Office, Bridesmaids) as the plucky title character, a young woman who spent her formative years underground in a doomsday cult before being rescued and starting a whole new life in N.Y.C.

The premise may sound dark, but in practice, it’s an ingenious starting point for an offbeat fish-out-of-water sitcom. Yes, Kimmy is naïve to the ways of the big city, but she’s also resilient as fuck, a quality that endears her to the lively supporting characters, including heavy hitters Tituss Burgess as her flamboyant roommate, Jane Krakowski as her delusionally entitled boss, and comedy legend Carol Kane as her nosy landlady.

Flavored with the same absurd, urban humor that fueled 30 Rock, but shot through the eyes of the relentlessly sunny Kimmy instead of the chronically cranky Liz Lemon, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is destined to become another comedy classic. So try to savor it for as long as you can. (Or, you know, stay up all night watching it. Whatevs, it’s Friday!)
