Amy Schumer Opens Up About Her Experience With Domestic Violence With Unfiltered Honesty

by Patty Affriol

Amy Schumer gets serious in her new memoir, The Girl With the Lower Back Tattoo, opening up about how her ex-boyfriend emotionally and physically abused her.

Amy writes in detail about the abuse she endured. In unfiltered honesty, she discusses how her ex shoved her onto the hood of a car in a rage and hurt her head and elbow. When Amy attempted to run away, her ex’s aggression escalated and he reached for a butcher knife. “I was screaming for him to stop, when he grabbed a butcher knife from a drawer,” she wrote, via People. “And that’s when I was sure he was going to kill me. It may sound cliche, but I saw my life flash before my eyes.”

Her raw honesty on domestic violence can be a lifeline for many survivors. It is important that narratives about abuse and recovery are accessible to raise awareness, decrease stigma, and help victims understand they are not alone. As Amy writes, “It can happen to anyone. You’re not alone if it’s happening to you, and you’re not exempt if it hasn’t happened to you yet.”

Amy’s memoir also reveals other parts of her past that many people can relate to. She goes into detail about dating apps, sexual assault, her mother’s affair and her father’s illness, leaving her stripped to the world.

“Beautiful, ugly, funny, boring, smart or not, my vulnerability is my ultimate strength. There’s nothing anyone can say about me that’s more permanent, damaging, or hideous than the statement I have forever tattooed upon myself. I’m proud of this ability to laugh at myself— even if everyone can see my tears, just like they can see my dumb, senseless, wack, lame lower back tattoo,” she writes, via Mashable.

Her vulnerability and honesty are exactly why I can’t wait to read it. It looks like I’m not the only one excited about this book. I’ll be reading it alongside Reese Witherspoon and Amy Tamblyn!
