Before I knew I was queer, I knew I didn’t like The Backstreet Boys or *NSYNC as much as my friends, and everything about Ginger Spice was goals. When Blink-182 came out with their video for “I Miss You” in 2003, it was banned in my house because my mom caught me watching it and was disgusted by the two women making out. I didn’t need to see two girls kissing to get my mind wandering, though. This list of music videos made my face blush before I knew why.
1. “Lady Marmalade” by Christina Aguilera, Lil’ Kim, Mya, and Pink (2002)
When this video came out in 2002, not only was it not banned in my household—my mom loved it! But is this not one of the sexiest videos ever made? Four hot women in sexy, vintage lingerie dancing and singing about sex? Yes. Yes, it is.
2. “No Scrubs” by TLC (1999)
Chilli, T-Boz, and Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes were three beautiful women whose music was always sex-positive and unabashed. I was just 7 years old when the video for “No Scrubs” came out in 1999, but I remember it fondly. Chilli looks angelic dressed in white, balancing on a large swing as she sings the opening verse, and it only gets better from there.
3. “Ex-Girlfriend” by No Doubt (2000)
Did Gwen Stefani have the same make-up artist for her 2000 video for “Ex-Girlfriend” as T-Boz and Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes did a year earlier? Why were artists the late 90s and early aughts so driven for some futuristic, alien-like look? Is it weird if I think it’s sexy?
4. “Landslide” by Dixie Chicks (2002)
Natalie Maines was clearly trying to invoke her inner Stevie Nicks with the big, curly hair and draping black gown she wore in the video for the Dixie Chicks cover of “Landslide”—and, girl, it worked for me. If you totally forgot about the Dixie Chicks, I’ll save you the Google search: They drew a goatee and devil horns on a photo of Donald Trump during the kickoff of the American leg of their 2016 world tour.
5. “That Don’t Impress Me Much” by Shania Twain (1998)
No one can deny how sexy Shania Twain was in the video for “That Don’t Impress Me Much.” No one.
