11 Lady-Centric TV Shows Not To Miss This Month

by Holly Trantham

The holidays may be over, but the bone-chilling weather is just beginning. Thankfully, television is back and with all sorts of good excuses for you to stay in. We pulled together our seven snow day (and night!) picks from all the new and returning shows this month. Fear not: There are no live broadcasts of outdated musicals in your immediate future, but there are a whole lot of awesome boob tube moments you’ll love.

  1. Hindsight, series premiere (Vh1 January 7th). In this scripted series for Vh1, a woman goes to bed the night before her second marriage and wakes up the morning before her first one—in 1995. Middle parts, Doc Martens, endless nostalgic retrospectives: the 90s are having a moment. This could not have better timing.
  2. Girls, season 4 premiere (HBO January 11th). Premium cable’s arguably most divisive show is back. Will the titular girls evolve into more caring, self-aware human beings? Probably not, but they will still be fun to watch. Make sure you have that borrowed HBOGo password set to go.
  3. Parks and Recreation, final season premiere (NBC January 13th). With heavy hearts, it’s time to say goodbye to our favorite small town weirdoes. We’re dying to know what’s going to happen to our favorite waffle-loving heroine Leslie Knope after last season’s completely unpredicted time jump.
  4. Broad City, season 2 premiere (Comedy Central January 14th). It’s like your best friends are back. Is anyone not on board with comedy duo Abbi and Ilana? Don’t worry; you still have time to catch up on the first ten episodes. And then watch them again. And once more.

  5. The Fall, series 2 release (Netflix January 16th). Gillian Anderson is back as fierce feminist detective Stella Gibson. We’re stoked (and terrified) to see her finally track down serial killer Paul Spector. Because which is the real threat to Belfast’s society: a woman’s straightforward sexuality, or a menace hiding under the guise of a family man?
  6. Kroll Show, final season premiere (Comedy Central January 13th). Sadly, creator and star Nick Kroll has decided to wrap up the stories of all our favorite sketch characters—Bobby Bottleservice and the PubLizity gals, we will miss you! Be sure to tune in each week to appreciate comedy goddesses like Jenny Slate and Chelsea Perreti.

  7. Living Different, four-part miniseries (Tuesdays on Oxygen). This miniseries offers an honest discussion of the inherent difference in experience for women with different sexual identities. It’s pretty awesome—check it out here.
  8. Portlandia, season 5 premiere (Thursdays on IFC). It’s unbelievable this bizarrely specific sketch show is in its fifth season. We’re as obsessed with it as ever.

  9. Downton Abbey(Sunday nights on PBS). Julian Fellowes’ soapy look into the lives of the lords and ladies and servants of Downton is finally back. Between Daisy’s self-education and Lady Edith’s big personal issues, there are plenty of lady-centric storylines to get obsessed with.

  10. Scandal, How to Get Away with Murder, (returns onABC January 29th). It’s Shonda Night, y’all. #TGIT
  11. All of these things on Netflix. The digital channel is adding all sorts of new lady-faves to their movie listings, including ‘Mean Girls,’ ‘Election,’ and ‘Fort Bliss.’ Guess you know where you’ll find us when we’re not busy blogging. See all the new additions here.

See you couch-side!
