They say imitation is the finest form of flattery, and while this isn’t always true (aka when corporations steal from artists), when it’s an artist paying homage to another artist, it’s definitely sweet.
Lane Moore of It Was Romance has been a big fan of ’90s sweetheart Fiona Apple since she was a budding musician.
“Fiona Apple has been such an influence on me, creatively and personally, since I was a kid,” Moore told Gil Kaufman of Billboard. “My live performances are really raw and intense and I’m sure watching her have that same freedom and intensity and rawness on stage as a kid let me feel like it was OK to express myself in that way on stage too. I hope she never stops making music. She’s incredible.”
For the 20th anniversary of Apple’s hit “Criminal,” Moore created a shot-for-shot remake of the video — but instead of a man as the *apple* of Moore’s eye, it’s a woman.
Both videos have the sex-infused grunge edge that characterizes the artists’ individual personalities, but there’s something more captivating about Moore’s looming stare. I think I’m just a sucker for her soulful eyes.
“I directed the video and co-produced it and was really meticulous in how much I wanted it to match the original,” Moore, who plays electric ukulele in the four-piece band, told Billboard. “I searched to find that house that looked like the original house, I sought out costumes as similar to the ones they used in the video 20 years ago as I could find, I added MTV style title cards to the beginning and end, I found stuffed animals and props and a camera like the ones used in the video.”
