“You Bring Your Breasts, We’ve Got The Rest!” – The Upper Breast Side

by Janelle

I don’t know about you, but I feel like I’ve been reading a lot about breasts lately. Not only does public breastfeeding cause an uproar, but resources to help these women are being thrown under the bus too! And seemingly, West 70th, between Broadway and Columbus, the Upper Breast Side, can be considered a mecca for breastfeeding mothers. Owner, Felina Rakowski-Gallagher opened in hopes of providing a space for women that would make breastfeeding easier in New York City.

However, recently, the Upper Breast Side is facing challenges with the Pythian, whose space they occupy on the ground floor. A legendary landmark, the Pythian was originally built as an exclusive all-male lodge, which coincidentally may have something to do with these breast wars.

The Upper Breast Side was fined $250 for leaving their door improperly ajar, although Felina argues the door is much too heavy for pregnant women or mothers with strollers. In response, she has filed a discrimination complaint with the New York State Division of Human Rights.

And now the Pythian is fighting back saying that the space is not being occupied by what was originally stated and is a retail store instead of a resource center. However, as described on the company’s website, the Upper Breast Sides provides multiple services for customers including breast pump consultation, as well as, weekly “latch-on clinics” and proper bra fittings.

Unfortunately, this looks likes a never-ending battle for Felina, who is only trying to help out breastfeeding mothers. She even provides a delivery services for those who forgot their pumps and are already at work, anywhere below 99th Street in Manhattan. This woman has thought of EVERYTHING!
