The Ultimate Collection of Women Who Rock

by Erika W. Smith

D.C. ladies, now is your chance to celebrate women who rock!

The National Museum of Women in the Arts is closing its 25th Anniversary year with an awesome exhibit called “Women Who Rock: Vision, Passion, Power,” opening September 7.

The exhibit covers women in popular music from the 1920s to today, including icons like Billie Holiday, Janis Joplin, Yoko Ono, and Madonna. Visitors will see handwritten lyrics, instruments, and clothing, including Joan Jett’s electric guitar, one of Meg White’s drums, and Lady Gaga’s meat dress.

“Women Who Rock” is divided into eras that feature icons and trailblazers of the times while examining how they changed both music and society. These eras have provocative titles like “Get Outta That Kitchen, Rattle Those Pots and Pans” and “Revolution, the Counterculture and the Pill” that promise to look at how social movements from suffrage to civil rights to riot grrrl have changed music and society.

The exhibit was originally on display at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum from May 2011 to February 2012. If you can’t get yourself to D.C., make sure you check out the exhibit online, at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum website here. Without leaving your desk, you can read about these pioneering ladies or watch incredible vintage performance videos, like this video of Aretha Franklin belting out “Respect” in 1968.
