Here at BUST, we have our own directory of female illustrators that we love to hire but now there’s an amazing site that features only women artists, and we’re thrilled!
Thanks to Women Who Draw—an amazing public directory of talented female illustrators—designers, producers, and editors can choose from a selection of diverse artists, whose work might have otherwise been overlooked because of their race, gender, or sexuality.
What’s even more appealing is that even if you don’t need to hire an artist, the page showcases beautiful illustrations that are absolutely captivating to browse through. It feels like looking at the best art of Instagram without having to comb through fluffy travel pics and selfies. As I look through the site, I can’t help but feel a bit jealous of their artistic talent.
The directory was created by an anonymous group of women who were dissatisfied by the low numbers of female illustrators hired by major publications. It’s 2016, people. This type of employment practice is not acceptable! In order to combat this, the site spotlights women artists and less visible groups of women (i.e women of color & LGBT+). It’s also “trans-inclusive and includes women, trans, and gender-nonconforming illustrators.” Pretty awesome, right?
The website allows artists to feature a sample of their work alongside information on how they identify in terms of race/ethnicity, location, religion, and orientation. The result is an amazing constellation of global artists, that unfortunately, without the site, might have been left unnoticed.
People looking to hire an artist now have no excuse for their lack of diversity.
Here is some of the incredible talent that’s featured on the site.
