‘Women of Letters’ Is Pee-Yourself Hilarious

by Taia Handlin

“Women of Letters” is fucking hilarious. Laughing, crying, peeing yourself hilarious. When it’s not being hilarious, it’s moving you in ways you didn’t think were possible outside the shit romantic comedies that you totally don’t watch and definitely don’t cry at.

A monthly event in NYC (and also in Australia, where it originated), “Women of Letters” presents a group of female writers, actresses, prominent intellectuals, and all around badass ladies, who read letters they have written to that month’s topic. Sofija Stefanovic is the show’s warm, hilarious host and October’s cast was comprised of Lisa Kron, Mara Wilson, Kathleen Turner, Susannah Cahalan, Margaret Colin, and Elyssa East. The topic was “letter to my 80-year-old self.”

Weaving in and out of advice and hopes for their older selves, selections from their younger journals, personal reflections and political hopes, with plenty of stories and communal laughter about menstruation (seemingly required of any show about the female experience), every reader invites you to share a part of herself for an evening. You make a room full of best friends for a few hours and share a uniquely wonderful experience. You are reminded that you’re not the only one; that everyone is weird and neurotic, afraid of death and of life, and afraid that her period is leaking through her pants and everyone is totally talking about it.

The next Women of Letters is Wednesday, November 4th at Joe’s Pub and tickets can be found here. The proceeds go to the New York Women’s Foundation. The readers will be Lucy Alibar, Mallory Ortberg, Nyemiah Supreme, Melissa Febos, and Franchesca Ramsey.
