Ever dance merrily in a room full of feminists?
Me neither, until I partied Planned Parenthood style on Tuesday at their 11th annual Summer Sex and Spirits event, a night I’d describe as half fundraiser/silent auction, half rave. I spent my evening at the Broad Street Ballroom enjoying the fabulous open bar (they had a cocktail named the Ruth GINsburg), boogeying to perfectly DJ’ed music, and marveling at the work of Mistress B, a leather-clad balloon dominatrix who dispenses helium for her latex creations through a nipple pump. (Thanks to her, many guests were carrying around sexy black balloon whips and sporting balloon hats topped by penises).
The room was crawling with kickass performers, like a bongo-drumming jazz trio I spotted a few times, and a cohort of cheerleaders doing high-flying stunts with seeming ease.
The shindig was planned entirely by members of Planned Parenthood of New York’s Action Fund Activist Council, an all-volunteer coalition launched in 2005 to help expand outreach local efforts and bring like-minded, pro-choice city dwellers into the fight for reproductive justice. Frankly, after witnessing their work in person, I want to join up immediately and girl, so should you.
But at the very least, round up some friends and stop by the Council’s 6th annual Sex Ed Trivia night at Alewife in Queens next week, complete with drink specials all night and prizes for winners. All proceeds will benefit PPNYC’s fabulous and necessary health services, education initiatives, and legislative advocacy, so consider it an act of feminist heroism.
And really, isn’t trivia best played with people who respect your bodily autonomy?
