You probably already knew that our government leaders are predominately white and male, and that our country isn’t predominately white and male. Why is this a problem? Well, without the issues of the citizens in mind, the majority is likely to suffer. Having the access to vote doesn’t aid in fighting for all demographics, but allowing leadership of all races and genders will create more equal representation.
With the help of Women Donors Network, Who Leads Us has put together surveys and statistical information of our elected officials from federal to local government. The New Organizing Institute analyzed the data of more than 42,000 American elected officials in the spring of 2014 and compared it to the latest Census data, proving how unbalanced our leadership is compared to the population. They also conducted a survey addressing what the voting public wants and their view on the current leadership in America. We need to see more diversity of race and gender in leadership in order to progress and address the needs of Americans.
Out of the 800 voters surveyed, the majority said our elected leaders should be “the best and the brightest.” When asked to describe what our current elected leaders represent, they said it is “an old boys’ club.” These voters want policies that help elect more women and POC, and said that there are barriers in the way to create diverse leadership.
