What We Can Learn About The Election Through Map Memes

by Devon Preston

It’s fair to say that social media has played a huge role in the 2016 election, both on serious terms and for comic relief. Social media has made scandals such as Trump’s “locker room talk” spread across the web within a matter of seconds and millennials have certainly played a special part in reacting to some of the shenanigans between the two campaigns. Last week, an email from Eric Trump was leaked, where he borrowed a graph from data journalism website FiveThirtyEight to show the results of the election if only men had the right to vote, causing the internet to literally shit its pants. Over the past week, both Trump and Clinton supporters have taken to Twitter to express their thoughts on this data.

While some Trump supporters took this graph and ran with it like it was a prophecy from God himself, creating the tasteful #repealthe19th hashtag to discourage women from voting in the election, other people chose to rely on the actual data provided by FiveThirtyEight and pose some very important questions to the article’s creator, Nate Silver. People on social media started tweeting Silver about his article, which showed the gender divide between the two candidates and explained Clinton’s 10 point lead in the polls was a result in her favorability with women, but many wanted him to release information about demographics other than gender. Intersectionality is something that is extremely important in today’s culture and this map failed to acknowledge the diversity that we have in the United States. However, Silver failed to produce said information, despite creating a video which explained that this data had been curated by his site, which led the internet to take “what the election would look like” and make a meme out of it. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you some of the ridiculous map memes that have been created out of dividing voting rights among genders. And while most of these memes are extremely silly, keep in mind how other intersectional identities beyond gender have played a large role in the 2016 election.
