Watch Saoirse Ronan And The Women of SNL Fight Sexual Harassment Through Song

by Lydia Wang

This weekend, Saoirse Ronan hosted Saturday Night Live for the first time in her career. Among the many highlights, she joined the women of SNL to sing a fun, cute song about some things that are not so fun and cute.

In just three minutes, “Welcome to Hell” offers a crash course (and maybe, to some, a wake-up call) on the history of powerful men harassing and then silencing women. Dressed in metallic pinks and purples, Ronan, Cecily Strong, Aidy Bryant, and Kate McKinnon lick lollipops, pout, and play with their hair. “Now House of Cards is ruined, and that really sucks,” Ronan chants, referring to the multiple sexual assault allegations against actor Kevin Spacey. She then continues, “Well, here’s a list of stuff that is ruined for us,” before launching right into it: parking, walking, drinking, hotels, and many more places and activities.

The best part of the song, though, comes from Leslie Jones, who interrupts the group to ask, “You do know that it’s, like, a million times worse for a woman of color, right?” The women all emphatically agree, and Jones joins the skit.

No matter how catchy the song is, though, don’t be fooled. As Aidy Bryant sings, “This ain’t a girl group. We just travel in a pack for safety.”
