We Need To Talk About Miscarriage Stigma

by Eleonor Botoman

Miscarriages are a lot more common than we think. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, miscarriages are still the most common type of pregnancy loss. 10-25% of all clinically recognized pregnancies will end in miscarriage, but we never talk about it. Miscarriage remains one of the biggest stigmas women have to overcome, but psychologist Jessica Zucker is working to end the silence.

October 15th marks Pregnancy + Infant Loss Awareness Day. This day was created in order to show just how common miscarriage is, to help women find networks of support through this confusing and challenging time. As Laura Turner wrote in a recent article for Buzzfeed, the miscarriage stigma needs to end so more women can feel comfortable coming forward about their loss: “One of the most common refrains you encounter when you have a miscarriage is that ‘nobody talks about it…Talking about miscarriage is complex and personal, and no one who doesn’t want to talk about it should have to. But I had several people to call as soon as I got home from the hospital because close friends of mine had been open with me about their own miscarriages.”

In honor of October 15th, Doctor Zucker has released a new collection dedicated to mothers who have endured these losses in hopes of encouraging more conversation around miscarriage and breaking down pregnancy taboos. This particular line honors “rainbow babies” — the babies that are born after the mother has experienced a miscarriage. Her campaign calls for solidarity amongst mothers everywhere and features women who have rainbow babies or who are currently pregnant with a rainbow baby. Check out a sneak peek below:
