We Love a Man in a Tutu

by Genevieve Bleidner

Here’s a heartwarming story to kick off the last full week of Breast Cancer Awareness Month; New York-based photographer Bob Carey has been photographing himself wearing a pink tutu for breast cancer awareness, calling it The Tutu Project.

Carey first donned the tulle in support of his wife, Linda, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2003. Aww. And the man sure knows how to rock a flouncy pink skirt:

Carey has recently released Ballerina, a book of these images, which will benefit breast cancer organizations such as Cancercare.org and the Beth Israel Department of Integrative Medicine Fund. The book includes photos of this full-bellied, hairy-chested dude rocking a tutu everywhere from a lush rural field to the middle of Times Square and also recounts some of the adventures he’s had along the way.

Carey gives a positive spin to a battle which none of us ever want to face. “Oddly enough, [his wife’s] cancer has taught us that life is good, dealing with it can be hard, and sometimes the very best thing—no, the only thing—we can do to face another day is to laugh at ourselves, and share a laugh with others.”

Oh, and since we still have a week and change left in October, how about donating a mammogram
