How many #firsts have you had in the past few years? At any age, everyone has something on their list of hypothetical “to-do’s,” but how many of us actually ever check off those boxes and dive head first into a possibly terrifying new experience? In this amazing video, An and Ria are two Dutch women in their 70s who have never flown on a plane before, but they’re about to. The pair, who have never met before, come together to share their very first flight… to Barcelona. An is understandably frightened, telling the camera that she’s afraid of hanging in the air, but her companion, Ria, couldn’t be more excited if she tried.
Their interaction in the airport, watching planes take off and sharing their expectations before boarding, as well as on the plane, taking in the unbelievable view of the clouds is sure to cover you from head to toe in goosebumps. When I watched the video with my younger sister a few nights ago, I had a moment where I could completely recall my first flight and that feeling of adrenaline coursing through me, and I remembered how my heart sputtered when I saw the spectacular landscape of clouds and ocean thousands of feet below me. It’s the kind of thing that reminds you of how small you are in comparison to the rest of the world, but also how incredibly alive you are. An’s visceral response, so terrified at first but melting into joy, is heartwarming to see, and Ria, unable to contain herself during the take off, falls silent for the first time. If you’re looking for that kind of heart-squeezing motivation to do something you’ve never tried before, this is for you. If you need a reason to smile your face right off, this is for you. Check out the video below, and don’t forget to start considering taking that next step to cross off one of your firsts.
