When Israeli-born photographer Atalia Katz traveled to Ethiopia after a divorce, she didn’t expect that the photos she took along her journey would end up in a Manhattan gallery. Her work has been praised by Zone Contemporary Art Gallery founder Jennifer Bahng for portraying universal humanity through the “extraordinary cultural value of these isolated groups.” One particular group Katz spotlights is the Ethiopian Jews, considered by many to be one of the Lost Tribes of Israel. Bahng highlights Katz’s ability to “spotlight the religious rituals and daily experience of this unique cultural enclave” as they hope to someday emigrate to Israel and join the more than 120,000 Ethiopians already living there. There is an opening reception tonight at Zone Contemporary Art Gallery in New York from 5pm – 9pm and the exhibit is open starting today until April 30th.
