Video of the Day | Fiona Apple

by Laurel Walsh

Is it bad that I hope this song gets stuck in my head? Fiona Apple’s latest video release is almost too good for me to handle.

“Hot Knife” is from Fiona’s most recent album, last June’s The Idler Wheel. The track starts simple and steadily builds, layer by sonic layer, with the video’s visual complexity building right at-pace. What begins with clean beats on a black-and-white drum ends with a colorful collection of sights and sounds on a screen split five ways.

It was directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, whose work you’ve probably seen before (There Will Be Blood, The Master, Punch Drunk Love, Boogie Nights…). He was also the guy behind the camera for “Paper Bag” and “Fast As You Can,” two of our favorite Fiona videos. And a fun fact: P.T.A. is an ex-lover of Ms. Apple herself. I’m a little jealous.

The pair worked with Fiona’s sister Maude Maggart (the other lady in the vid) to pull “Hot Knife” together, in a concept-development and production process that reportedly spanned several months.

The result is worth waiting for. Check it out and tell us what you think.
