UPDATE: Circumnavigator is Fine, but Ending Her Mission

by Krista Ciminera

It was reported yesterday that Abby Sunderland, a sixteen-year-old who is five months into a quest to become the world’s youngest circumnavigator, was lost at sea. Thankfully, rescue efforts were able to find her, and she is alive and doing well.

Though she is well, her father says that her quest to circumnavigate the world has ended.  Abby had initially set sail from Marina Del Ray, California, on January 23rd but had to stop in Cabos San Lucas, Mexico.  She then restarted on February 6th, wishing to start and end there, but was forced to stop at Cape Town, South Africa for repairs.

After yesterday’s diversion, her efforts will stop.  Abby is still a brave young woman for attempting such a feat alone, and I hope she tries again in the future!
