Though the Steubenville verdict was announced just two days ago, it seems that this story is still not over. Two teenage girls have now been charged for using Facebook and Twitter to threaten the life of the 16 year old victim of the Steubenville rape case.
The two girls, aged 16 and 15, are appearing before a juvenile court judge in Steubenville today. Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine stated in response, “Let me be clear, threatening a teenage rape victim will not be tolerated. If anyone makes a threat verbally or via the Internet, we will take it seriously, we will find you, and we will arrest you.”
These two arrests bring to light the fact that, though rape trial is now over, the effects of the Steubenville case are still present, and much attention is still required to fight the rape culture in our country. As Katie McDonough of Salon wrote, “Another unfortunate lesson from Steubenville? Girls – and women – can be rape apologists, too.”
