Pakistani Women Are Fighting A Domestic Violence Bill With #TryBeatingMeLightly

by Kailey Thompson

A Pakistani group has drafted a bill that would allow a husband to “lightly beat” his wife for offenses such as dressing improperly, talking to strangers, or refusing sex. In response, Pakistani photographer Fahhad Rajper launched a photo-based social media campaign with the hashtag #TryBeatingMeLightly to criticize the bill.

The campaign has gained traction online as women have begun to engage with the tag to protest the bill, which was drafted by the Council of Islamic Ideology, a group of clerics and scholars that advises the government. Rajper shares photos on social media accounts with quotes from the women he photographs sharing what they would do if someone were to “lightly beat” them.
