Unlike the rest of his peers, high school senior Jeydon Loredo will not be appearing in the La Feria School District yearbook. Why? Because Jeydon, who identifies as male, is wearing a tuxedo in his picture.
The tuxedo is standard wear for every other boy being photographed, but according to the school district, Jeydon’s photo in particular does not meet “community standards.” Wait…what? Can someone send a memo to these people that it’s 2013?
Stella Loredo, Jeydon’s mom and super-cool lady, said the school superintendent insisted Jeydon would only be included if his picture featured him wearing a “drape or blouse.” Yeah, someone definitely needs to send that memo.
Jeydon’s lawyer, along with the Human Rights Campaign, is working to make sure that this violation of basic freedoms does not come to pass. Jeydon, on the other hand, just wants to be remembered by his friends and classmates, like everybody else.
“[The school district] saying he is not male and not allowing this photo to be in there, it’s infuriating,” said Stella Loredo. Infuriating doesn’t even begin to cover it.
