Totally Rad: 5 High Fashion / Nineties Culture Mash-Ups

by Intern Kelsie

If, in 1996, I had possessed a crystal ball and chosen to look forward to 2012, six year old me would’ve been pumped. Cause for celebration? The fact that fashion has turned into a living, breathing Toys R Us store.

This picture of Lady Gaga has been making the Internet rounds, and her My Little Pony-inspired tresses are doing all the right things for me. She’s giving us Child of the Nineties realness, and she’s not the only one lately.

Check out the 5 high fashion/nineties culture pair-ups below and let us know in the comments which references from your childhood you’d love to see making a comeback on the runways.

1. Jeremy Scott and Lisa Frank

Jeremy Scott gives us rainbow explosions a la Lisa Frank. I had stickers, binders, velvet posters (that I colored myself, obviously) and this leopard print suit takes me back.

2. Alexander McQueen and Furbies

McQueen is the ultimate in high fashion boundary-pushing. This season, Sarah Burton chose to push the boundaries of just how closely one could resemble a Furby. Apparently, the answer is pretty damn closely.

3. Commes des Garcons and Ronald McDonald

Wear this to your local McDonald’s PlayPlace.
I dare you.

4. Chris Benz and Barbie

Sparkles and bows and blonde wigs make for an updated take on Barbie-Goes-to-the-Office in Chris Benz’s Fall/Winter 2012 collection.

5. Gareth Pugh and Transformers

Before the Michael Bay franchise, Transformers were standard playground fare. Pugh’s interpretation is for the ball-busting city broad who’s not afraid to rock an Optimus Prime inspired look.
