Top 5 Chic Ways to Handle a Leaky Ceiling

by Rebecca Peterson

If you’re in New York City, there is a 30 percent chance it’s already raining, which means your too-good-to-be-true Manhattan apartment ceiling is going from chic to leak. While climbing up onto the roof yourself, and covering the whole damn thing with a DIY cement kit might seem like a good idea, we’ve got some tips and tricks to make waiting out the rain storm a little less weathering.

1. Paper Mache your BUST

Place an old copy of BUST Magazine under the leak, and let it soak up a few hours worth of rain. At the end of the day, your copy of BUST will be perfectly primed for some paper mache! Just add glue, and you’re ready to cover any and all of your furniture with sex tips  from Carol Queen or the lovely Lizzy Caplan.

2. Water your in-home garden

While tomato plants do best in summer, chances are you run your space heater enough to host a full-fledged greenhouse. Combined with the constant leak, you may even have enough humidity to grow pineapples. In any case, consider placing a plant or two in danger zones. Your floor will stay dry through the storm, and you won’t have buy an Aqua Globe

3. Decorate with stylish mason jars

Consider lining your bedroom walkway with stylish mason jars or buckets, or decorate your own with stamps and a sharpie. We love this mod podge idea from Daily Fix, which case easily be adapted to utilize the aforementioned moist copies of BUST.

4.  Tie dye your sheets

If you are more of a “go with the flow” kind of a gal, make your daily drip into an awesome new set of tie-dyed sheets! Line the floor with plastic bags, then place your bundled up sheets and pillow cases under the drip. Next, mark your sheets with small dabs of water soluble paint. The end result should look like something from Urban Outfitters.

5. Place dirty laundry underneath

Eco ladies know that the sustainable use of resources is always in style. Leave your dirty laundry pile under the leak, by accident or necessity, and your clothes will be rinsed and ready for drying in the fresh pre-winter air. Thanks, Mother Earth!
