This Woman is Making Alternative Medicine Products You Should Know About

by Andrea Stopa

At Good Fight Herb Co., Community Herbalist Lauren Giambrone produces healthy herbal products to provide natural cures and overall wellness. The medicinal products come from locally grown, organic herbs, and range from potions and ciders, to body-care products, to dried herb blends. Not only does Lauren create all these natural products, she also offers classes on alternative medicine and hosts her own radio show. And even better, she’ll be at BUST Craftacular’s Primped this Sunday, May 4th! Don’t miss a chance to meet her in person and check out her wares.

Tell us about yourself.

Hello! I’m Lauren. I’m a Community Herbalist & Medicine Maker living in NY’s Hudson Valley, in the beautiful small town of Germantown, just south of Hudson. I locally and organically grow and wildcraft many medicinal herbs, and transform them into a line of handcrafted medicinal products for self care and thriving health. I believe in carrying on the beautiful and long tradition of herbal medicine, and offering an empowering alternative for taking care of ourselves and our communities. I also teach classes, have a health centered radio show on our awesome community radio station, and work with folks individually by offering consultations and custom formulas. I love getting botanical tattoos, harvesting nettles in the woods and swimming in different rivers come summer.

How did you get started?

Well, from a real bad case of burn out, to be honest. I started studying herbalism because I wanted and needed to nourish and restore my nervous and immune systems after years of burning my candle at both ends, and suffering physically and emotionally from it. I knew I had to make the choice to change my life and invest in self care and soon enough, I found the wonder of herbal medicine. Thank goodness! After studying at the Northeast School of Botanical Medicine and interning at the Ithaca Free Clinic, I knew my work in the world was to support folks supporting themselves. Good Fight was born out of a desire to take what I had learned and offer that to my community. It’s an ever evolving project and I’m in it for the long haul!

What’s inspiring you right now?

The Lemon Balm in my garden reawakening from such a long, cold winter, and popping up and out through the soil despite the gray days, intermittent sun and cold nights that Spring has been offering. How fierce! I know she’ll be providing us with the best medicine because she’s making it through this seasonal transition like a champ, and I am so grateful for her.

Any advice for those starting out in the body care industry?

Put self care into your schedule and don’t always leave it for the end of the day when perhaps you’re exhausted and just need to crash out. Think about, and make plans for, how you want your work to feel and how you can support yourself doing it – physically, emotionally, financially, spiritually, etc. Your mind, body, heart and spirit are just as important to manage and support as your clients and products are. So keep practicing taking good care of yourself in this industry, and know I’ll be doing the same. xo.

What are you most looking forward to at BUST Craftacular’s Primped?

I am majorly pumped for the braid bar and ten minute tarot readings!
