It comes to no surprise that many of the people who voted for Trump have come to regret this decision, given the choices he has made during the last few weeks following the election. This is in all likelihood because the President-elect has revoked several campaign promises and has elected politicians to his cabinet that contradict his promise to “drain the swamp” in Washington. While we predicted that a day would come when even the hardcore Trump supporters would become woke to Trump’s hypocrisy, that doesn’t make this Tumblr page, which organizes their collective revelations, any less satisfying for those of us who are still terrified by his upcoming inauguration.
The Tumblr page, entitled Trumpgrets, was created by a former Trump supporter who has since come to regret his decision to stand by Trump in the last election. The page, which has also started a similar Twitter thread by the same name, has collected the tweets and responses from fellow Trump supporters who are outraged that he has started to behave like an actual politician—from cozying up to politicians and CEOs that he plans to bring into his cabinet, as well as rethinking some of the radical promises that he made during his campaign, including having Hillary Clinton arrested or creating a Muslim registry.
Knowing that quite a few Trump’s supporters are finally coming to their senses in terms of regretting their vote is reassuring, because many people are finally realizing how terrible a Trump presidency will likely be for this country, however, it is important to recognize that some of these people are angry for all of the wrong reasons.
It’s understandable that many of Trump’s supporters are upset by his choices for cabinet positions because many of his picks, i.e. Bannon, Sessions, and DeVos, will be devastating to this country—yet there are also people who are angry with Trump for taking back statements that he will prosecute Hillary Clinton. Many of Trump’s supporters are expressing regret because Trump isn’t playing the part of a bully while preparing for the presidency. These are the kind of views that are extremely worrisome going forward because they indicate that while Trump may not lead this country with hatred, his followers expect him to come into the oval office with guns blazing. While Trump may have decided not to press charges on Clinton or enforce the immigrant policies he has proposed during his campaign, there are people out there who were expecting this to result from his victory and are genuinely outraged that he is not the tyrant he talked himself up to be—and it is also fair to assume that many of them could take action because of this.
Going forward into Trump’s presidency, it is important to be aware that many of Trump’s supporters are pissed that he does not plan to do some of the horrible things he has proposed during the past. While Trump or his cabinet may not act as a threat to everyday Americans, his supporters who lead with hatred are still fired up about this election even after the results came back in their favor. It’s time for these hateful “trumpgrets” people to realize that the America they have envisioned for themselves will never come to fruition. Because we won’t stand for that to happen.
