I never thought I would feel empathy for a blow-up sex doll, but I was mistaken. In a new short film directed and written by Olivia Saperstein, we follow the tragic story of a plastic lady —from her emerging from a mail order box to a guy’s taking shots out of her dainty plastic vagina. The doll’s perspective shows us all the gritty and slimy moments of an out of control party. You know, the parts of the party you hope you don’t remember in the morning.
Plastic is short but — no, not sweet. More… sour, but in a delicious kind of way. Plastic can leave you reevaluating your relationships with both your favorite objects and your favorite people. Human actor-wise, Cait Bliss plays a fabulous party guest. She seals the story when she delivers a painfully relatable monologue about the relationship between texting and dating in the twenty-first century. In fact, the frustrations of dating during one’s twenties was one of the film’s big inspirations.
Saperstein said of the project, “I wanted to be sure that Plastic spoke to the frustrations of twenty-something dating life in an age of cell phones, and to the extreme objectification of women, but also to the pressures that both genders face when it comes to that.”
Plastic premieres at Friar Club Film Festival on Friday, April 4th, during the 6:15 p.m. shorts block. For more info on the film, check out their website.
