This is What a Feminist Fashion and Beauty Fair Looks Like

by Maggie Carr

I’m not sure if it was the multiple mimosas or lugging around a heavy-ass swag bag all day, but I’ve been wandering around in a fashion- and beauty-addled daze since last weekend. Is anyone else in the same boat?

In case you missed the first-ever (EVER!) BUST Craftacular’s Primped last Sunday, May 4th, read on to be overcome by jealousy of all the amazing shit you missed. Like, really.

Shoppers lined up around the block an hour before the doors opened to score one of our coveted goody bags, featuring swag from SheaMoisture, Sublime Stitching, Tulip Body Art, Krylon, go-comb, Storey Publishing, Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab, and a free bottle of juice from Red Jacket Orchards.

Once inside, folks flocked to over 85 fabulous vendors selling small-batch, eco-friendly beauty and body products…

…fabulous vintage treasures…

…and adorable handmade accessories.

The gut-busting and gorgeous comedian Jessica Williams (currently a correspondent on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart) treated us to an Instagram of her feminist-friendly loot, too:

Blogger and retro-beauty guru Kristina Uriegas-Reyes manned (womaned?) a super-popular flower crown table for the first half of the day.

Glue and flower clippings were flying, and we were extremely impressed with our attendees’ handiwork:

Over at the SheaMoisture Makeup Oasis, celeb makeup artist Karisma Pari gave attendees bold makeup makeovers using the natural-beauty brand’s brand-spankin’-new makeup line.

The good-time gals of Fringe Salon were busily serving up unbelievably intricate braid ‘dos and springtime-fresh bang trims at the Fringe Salon Braid ‘n Bang Bar.

Meanwhile, at Ulysses Press‘s hoppin’ booth, shoppers took a break from the fashion frenzy by sitting down to some simple-yet-precious craft workshops led by Alison Caporimo, author of InstaCraft

…and got quick rave-ready hair chalk streaks at the DIY Dye booth.

BUST co-founder Debbie Stoller was among the many folks to test out new nail art techniques at the Homemade Nail Polish DIY station:

Attendees lined up for ten-minute tarot readings from Milan Powell…

…and hand massages from Alyssa Pinsker and Christina Bohnsack.

We took a mid-afternoon break for a feminist tea party with activists and fashion icons Sarah Sophie Flicker and Tennessee Thomas. Decked out in gorgeous vintage-inspired outfits (we especially loved Tennessee’s fresh-flower crown!), they fielded questions about feminism, entrepreneurship, and political action. Sarah Sophie’s sweet kiddos even made a cameo appearance. Thanks so much for being a part of it, ladies!

We were lucky to have two stellar performances on the Sock Dreams Music Stage, starting with the sweetly subversive Prettiots. They kicked things off with a cover of Miguel’s “Pussy Is Mine”…enough said!

The legendary Jolie Holland and her band treated us to a live set of songs from her gorgeous new album, Wine Dark Sea

Our girl Ali Gruber kept things high-energy all day, spinning everything from Queen Bey, to garage rock, to old-school hip-hop.

Primped was A Fashion, Beauty, and Vintage Fair for Stylish Rebels–and indeed, the stylish rebels showed up in full force, giving us some serious face in Michael Lavine‘s Portrait Photobooth.

Our beautiful and talented interns RULE SO HARD. Click here to check out the rest!

Thanks to all who came out to the first-ever BUST Craftacular’s Primped at the Brooklyn Night Bazaar space in Williamsburg! Check out BUST’s Facebook page for the rest of the pics.

The BUST Craftacular’s next stop is a one-day summer pop-up in LA’s Silver Lake ‘hood; vendor applications are open now through May 21st, so apply today to be part of the fun!

And an ENORMOUS thank-you to all of our fabulous sponsors, for making the day as glorious and gorgeous as possible!
