Impress your friends this Halloween by making your face the best costume of the day, with this terrifying tutorial from special effects makeup artist Amy Watanabe
Prep: Grab a palette to mix your paints on and start with a clean, makeup-free face. Have Q-tips on hand to clean up any mistakes as you go.
1. EYES/MOUTH OUTLINE
Use a brown eyeliner pencil to draw the outline of “the mouth” as shown, starting from the corners of the actual closed mouth and stopping at the chin. Sketch 6 small top teeth along the bottom lip and two larger fangs starting at the outside corners of the bottom lip, angling them slightly up to the top mouth outline. Lightly sketch the jaw line, going down the neck as shown (the bottom of the mouth’s outline should sit slightly below the collarbone). Draw the bottom teeth using the top teeth as a guide. Apply foundation a couple of shades lighter than your skin to top half of the face with a makeup sponge. Mix some purple and blue paint (Ben Nye Master Bruise Wheel, $18) and apply around the eyes as pictured using a small filbert brush. Line under the lower lashes with red paint; blend with your finger. Fill in the teeth with white paint (Ben Nye Clown White, $6.50) using a small angle brush.
2. MOUTH/TONGUE DETAILS
For the tongue, start by drawing a “V” with the brown eyeliner near the Adam’s apple and continue outlining the shape shown in the photo. Lightly draw small lines from the tip of the “tongue’s” center to the bottom teeth. Fill in the actual bottom lip with red paint mixed with purple using the small filbert brush.
3. TONGUE/LIP
Lightly fill the inside of the “mouth” area with black paint (Ben Nye Professional Clown Series Black, $12) using a square wash brush; do not fill in the tongue. Now finish applying foundation to the rest of the face and neck outside of the mouth.
4. TONGUE/BOTTOM
Use a foundation brush to fill in the tongue with red paint, blending it into the black. Mix some red paint into the black behind the bottom teeth to give them some depth using the small filbert brush. With some black paint on your brush, drag it through the middle of the tongue, then enhance the line by making sure it isn’t too defined. Add a little black shading around the edge of the tongue.
5. NECK/TONGUE
Darken the black areas. Add white highlights at the bottom of the tongue and sides with the angle brush. Using purple paint and a liner brush, add wrinkles/stretch lines around the bottom of thepainted mouth, up the neck, and along the natural smile lines above the actual mouth. Accent some of those lines along the neck using white paint and the angle brush. Slightly blend the edges of the fake mouth with the makeup sponge.
6. VEINS
Using a small liner brush and purple paint add veins to the face. They should be thicker around the bottom of the painted mouth and thin around the hairline (working toward the eyes), ears, and neck. Exaggerate any natural veins. Paint the top lip red with the liner brush then mix red with some white and very thinly line the outside of the top lip (not shown). Once you are stoked on the look set the makeup by feathering colorless setting powder (Ben Nye Neutral Face Powder Colorless, $7.25) lightly across the face using a large fan brush. Now dab some fake blood along the bottom teeth (as shown in the main image) to complete the look.
