At Once: New Blog Explores The Intersection Of Motherhood And Feminism

by Dawn Day

Two moms, Nicole Okumu and (BUST contributor!) Sarah Sophie Flicker, looking for answers to their longstanding questions about feminism and motherhood, have created the online community At Once to address and discuss the intersection of the two.

The posts include advice for parents, inspirational poetry, art and a reading syllabus along with the blog’s highlight “Shit Together” interviews. In the “Shit Together” interviews, different mothers answer a series of questions relating to whether they feel as if they have their shit figured out. So far, the interviews have included Flicker and Brooklyn-based stylist and creative consultant LaTonya Yvette.

“You know, no isn’t a bad word. We’re raised to lead with Yes, but when you have kids, yes gets you into trouble. Again, I’m not necessarily referencing my children. I’m just saying, when you have kids, you can’t do. it. all,” writes Yvette in her “Shit Together” interview, “So you say no more times than not. You cut out more unwanted friendships, and cancel more dates. But you also make sure that the things that exist are meaningful.”

Launched on Nov. 13, the blog is still fairly new, but we are excited to see the content and discussions that this platform will surely awaken.

“Motherhood, fatherhood and parenthood so often feels isolating and beyond personal,” co-founders Okumu and Flicker write on their about page, “This space begs the question, so well phrased by Maya Singer, ‘Is it just me or is it systemic?'”

Great question, and if you are looking for a community of feminist mothers pondering the answer, head over to At Once
