This 101-Year-Old Woman Descends Tall Buildings for Charity

by Olivia Harrison

Now this is impressive: Doris Long just became the world’s oldest abseiler, or person who descends very high vertical structures on ropes.

She took up the sport at 85, and Sunday, the 101-year-old beat her own record as the world’s oldest abseiler when she once again lowered herself down 328 feet of Portsmouth’s Spinnaker Tower in the United Kingdom.

Not only did she break an already impressive record, but Long’s feat helped raise $122,305 for Rowans Hospice. This was her sixteenth time doing the abseiling for hospice.

Of her achievement Long says, “It was very hard work, much harder than last year. It was so windy I swung about a bit but oh yes, I enjoyed it, I feel it’s well worth it.”

Wow. AND she plans to take on the tower again next year as well. Way to go, Doris. Another badass lady using her mad skillz for good.
