Photographer Katie Salisbury embarked on a trip through Germany and Greece with a small group of filmmakers to document the stories of refugee women and girls, creating the “She Is Syria” project. She encountered Afghani, Kurdish, Iraqi, Palestinian, Iranian, and Syrian women. Many were traveling alone with children.

“I miss everything…my friends, my house. I think it was a good life, it was. But now, no,” Nadia, a 37-year-old from Syria, told Sailsbury. Nadia is divorced and without children and was traveling with her mother and her younger brother. Asked if she could have anything, she responded, “I want not to die here. I want to die in my country. Not here, not in Germany. You know, if now [the war] finished, I will go back. Really, even if I don’t have anything.”
