These Lady-Comics Are Here to Brighten Your Day

by Intern Kelsie

Sometimes my latent teenage angst rears its head unexpectedly. Especially on a day like today, where in New York at least, all signs are pointing to ‘you-should’ve-stayed-in-bed,’ it can get intense. So to escape the drizzle outside and embrace my displaced adolescent rage, I’m turning to these fine doodling dames of Tumblr for company. Whether you’re happy, horny, hormonal, or (like me) just a tiny bit enraged that you’re expected to get out of bed every day, we’ve got something for you.

We’ve brought you roundups of webcomics a few times before now. Consider this an updated list of ladies you should be loving.

1. Kate or Die!

Kate Leth, a queer Canadian comic-maker (and seller), tells tales of her days at the comic shop, about dealing with her sexual orientation, and her interactions with her cat.

2. Natazilla

A sometimes-animator for Cartoon Network, Natasha Allegri posts her personal work on her Tumblr, including awesome gender-bending homo-erotic “Adventure Time” character modifications. She, too, writes prolifically about her cat. (Meow)

3. Charleskinbote

17-year-old Jenny produces hauntingly beautiful, hazy sketches that hearken back to that perfect high school feeling of perpetual existential crisis. Though she doesn’t disclose too much about her IRL identity, the blurbs that accompany her drawings are honest and almost universally applicable.

4. F*CK I’m in My 20s

The artist behind this tumblr remains unidentified, but if I didn’t know any better, I would swear it was me and every one of my friends. With simple drawings and disarmingly funny writing, this blog perfectly captures that strange purgatory that is life as a twentysomething.

5. Comiques

Recent School of Visual Arts graduate and Brooklynite Anne Emond chronicles city life with a keen eye for the ironic, ridiculous, and just plain funny. She helps me to almost be able to see the humor in my hour-long commute.
