Personally, when I think of Girl Scouts, I think of cookies. I also think of an organization that encourages young women to explore new activities and cultures, widening the scope of their education. However, Hans Zeiger, a Republican candidate for Washington’s House of Representatives wouldn’t agree with that assertion. He alleges (in a personal blog that he attempted to delete, but was still cached, thanks to Google) that (and I am not making this up): “the Girl Scouts allow homosexuals and atheists to join their ranks, and they have become a pro-abortion, feminist training corps.”
Actually, I don’t understand what’s so bad about them being all of these things (I would totally sign up for the Feminist Corps—like the Peace Corps, only more sassy?) but moreover, the dude’s kind of rude for saying that “If the Girl Scouts of America can’t get back to teaching real character, perhaps it will be time to look for our cookies elsewhere.” Oh, okay. So deny some pre-teens the opportunities that the Girl Scouts offer on what you (falsely) think is their teachings? Personally, I wasn’t sent to any kind of pro-abortion rallies in my time with the Girl Scouts. From what I remember we had potlucks focusing on international foods and we made God’s Eyes (that’s a religious component, right?) and other various yarn-and-popsicle stick crafts.
Perhaps what’s most interesting about this is the fact that the candidate attempted to delete his writings (on a site called Intellectual Conservative) and his opponents were able to save them via cached copies on the Google server. He’s young, just 25, and the writings were from his 18 and 19 year old self. Do the sometimes stupid things we say on the internet deserve to stick around for all time? Does he deserve a free pass, as he tried to delete the posts under the guise of having since “grown up”? Also, does he still boycott the Girl Scout Cookie sale, leaving more for me?
