The ‘Sexy Body Bag’ Halloween Costume. Seriously.

by Intern Scarlet

Halloween happens to be one of the best holidays ever, but it also can be one of the most upsetting. Whether it’s sexist, historically inaccurate, a shameless rip-off of something in pop culture (A “Ticktock Orange Juice”, anyone?), or just plain stupid, there’s a cheap, offensive costume for everyone out there. As a Halloween enthusiast I thought I was pretty well acquainted with the dark underbelly of cheap mass produced costumes. Turns out, not so much.

While perusing this list of 10 Inexplicable and Possibly Offensive Halloween Costumes, I saw something so crazily misogynistic, words fail. Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the Jane Doe DOA Bodybag Costume. Yep. This is a real thing.

 The description cleverly reads:

“He will be dead on arrival when you show up in this drop dead sexy Jane Doe DOA bodybag adult women’s costume. The dress hugs your every curve and the zipper..well, how low does it go? You decide!”

This, uh, thing is obviously awful. It conjures up weird implications of the high rates of violence against women and especially how this violence is sexualized. How is a dead anonymous woman in a body bag considered a ‘sexy’ Halloween costume? Seriously? Thoughts?
