The Pretenders Are Relentless With Their 12th Album

by Michael Levine

The Pretenders are back with their 12th album, Relentless, served up by singer/songwriter/musician/frontwoman/all-around dynamo Chrissie Hynde with a bravado she’s been cultivating since the band formed in 1978. The opener, “Losing My Sense of Taste”, tears it up immediately with punk-rock fervor; tracks like “A Love,” “Let the Sun Come in,” and “Vainglorious” deliver the signature Pretenders jangle-meets-slash guitar sound that never grows tired. “The Copa,” “Look Away,” and “Your House Is on Fire” take a softer approach, with Hynde’s unmistakable voice and introspective lyrics in the forefront. Two tracks featuring piano, “The Promise of Love” and “I Think About You Daily,” round out this eclectic musical collection perfectly.
