The NYC Zombie Crawl: 5 reasons to Hang With The Undead

by kaya payseno

Zombies are what’s up right now, they’re like vampires for alt-kids and they’re coming for you. Books, TV, and movies– you name it, the undead is in it. For some reason zombies just seem inspire us underdogs and weird kids. Zombie events like the NYC Zombie Crawl are popping up all over the globe. So if you don’t get the appeal of the undead let me share with you a little of what I learned running with my NYC Zombie Crawl friendos about why Zombies rule so hard they drool. (Check out their website for more events)

1. You get to dress up!

You can grab happy-hour drinks anytime but you won’t always have a squad of Zombies to prowl the streets with in between bars. Drinking is more fun when you can also scare strangers and there is a sense of solidarity when everyone commits to costumes so go with friends or go alone– the zombies will welcome you!

2. Networking (it doesn’t have to be horrible)

Networking brings to mind strangers in a hotel lobby with name tags, a lot of forced laughter, and the sweaty air of post-collegiate desperation. Life doesn’t have to be that way! At the zombie crawl you’ll meet  people in creative fields like makeup, costuming, music, acting, and everything else. People are having a good time and want to talk about what they do with other folks cool enough to dress up as a zombie on a Sunday. Don’t underestimate these connections.

3. Bands, Bands, Bands

It probably comes from being cool-creative people but dang,  zombies have the hook-ups with the good music. The after party some siq underground groups that not only had great stage presences but weren’t all dudes!

4. Intersection of sub-cultures

From costume enthusiasts to people dancing with hooks in their flesh–the NYC Zombie Crawl is place where people can channel their skills, passions, and weirdness. Some people are there because they love all things horror, other people just want to check out bands and either way they have fun.

5. Get out of your comfort zone

Maybe dressing up on a day that isn’t Halloween is something foreign to you or the idea of scaring strangers seems totally embarrassing, this is a place to challenge yourself to get weird!
