That’s the story behind Air , a new Vertigo comics ongoing series about the weird, magical process of flying in a post-9/11 world, about travel, identity, love, and loss, and what it really means to be a hero–if there are any such things.
Air is written by G. Willow Wilson , a former journalist whose work was published in the Atlantic Monthly and The New York Times Magazine, and drawn by M.K. Perker , whose illustrations have appeared in The New Yorker, among many other publications.
Even with those illustrious pedigrees, Wilson and Perker share a deep love for comics, and it shows in every pretty page of this oversized first issue. Wilson takes pride in having the only Vertigo series with a female lead character, and she has created a winner with Blythe, a smart girl working a rough job thrown into a situation she couldn’t have imagined.
Comics have a unique ability to create a world stranger and more unreal than any other medium, and even though so far Air is set in our reality, the feeling of magic just around the corner is on every page of this book. I can’t wait for issue #2!
