The Mis-adventures Awkward Black girl: Producer raises $44,000 to fund popular web series

The brain child of 26 year old producer and writer Issa Rae, The Mis-adventures of Awkward Black Girl is a web show that follows J, a self proclaimed awkward black girl as she navigates through life, love, and work. Tired of not seeing accurate representations of herself on television, Rae rallied a group of friends and college buddies to help produce the first few episodes.

What began this past January as a three minute web show has quickly gained a legion of devoted fans who can definitely relate to the situations  J winds up in.  The first episode finds J wondering, “What’s the protocol for repeatedly running into someone at a stop sign?”, as she tries to duck and dodge a one night stand who just won’t take a hint. No matter if it’s a racist supervisor or a first date that doesn’t go as expected, Awkward Black Girl tackles the topic at hand with a genius blend of humor and dry wit that the series has become known for.

Despite having upwards of 60,000 viewers per month, Rae wrote in a Huffington Post article that after producing almost six episodes out of pocket, she realized she couldn’t keep funding the show by herself.  If any new episodes of Awkward Black Girl were going to be made, she would need help. A kickstarter campaign was created in hopes of raising $30,000 to help with production costs needed to keep the show going. Fans came out in droves, putting their money where their heart was, and within weeks, over $44,000 was raised, exceeding the original goal. Now, because of the campaign’s success, Rae and her team are able to create five more episodes in addition to a season finale. Wanna check out past episodes? Head over to Awkwardblackgirl.com
