The (Healing) Power of Madge

by Debbie Stoller

Leave it to the talented cast of Glee to put a pop icon back at the top of the music charts (The Power of Madonna Soundtrack from their tribute episode was able to knock out Justin Bieber at No. 1 its debut week).

In an article today in The Guardian, author Wendy Shanker chronicles her obsession with the Material Girl and explains the profound influence she has had on her life.

Unlike most of us, Wendy has been fortunate enough to actually meet her idol–twice.

The first time was when she briefly served as Madonna’s talent liaison at the 1994 MTV Video Awards. Then, in 2000, Wendy got the chance to interview her for a women’s cable show.

Before the interview, Madge whispered in her ear, “Go ahead, be brilliant.”

These words, along with the many empowering messages in her music, helped Wendy find strength as she battled with the rare auto-immune disease, Wegener’s Granulomatosis.

It’s also what inspired her upcoming book, Are You My Guru: How Medicine, Meditation & Madonna Saved My Life (due out sometime in September).

“Bono once called Madison Square Garden ‘rock and roll’s great cathedral’, and more than once I’ve had an ecstatic experience there – thanks to my guru,” Wendy writes.

“Maybe, all this time, Madonna has been guru-ing you too, and you just didn’t know it.”

Hmmm…perhaps.
