The Girls Are Back In Town?! New NBC Comedies From Tina Fey and Amy Poehler!

by Brittany Allen

When the cast of 30 Rock bid a last adieu to their Thursday night slot on NBC…everything basically shattered for me. First The Office, now this? Suddenly, Parks & Recreation had to pull a lot of the comedy weight for the widely-acknowledged funniest network on the telly. And I suddenly had an extra hour and a half to fill every week, twiddling my thumbs in the absence of a Liz Lemon laugh riot.

It’s been a rough few years, but finally — does one dare to dream?! — there’s a pilot season on the horizon that just might fill the gap. Powerhouse 30 Rockstars Tina Fey and Robert Carlock have combined forces to create a new single cam comedy, following “a young woman who escapes from a doomsday cult and starts live over in New York.” It gets better: the series is set to star The Office’s Ellie Kemper, and it’s currently called Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. LADIES ON PRIMETIME, Y’ALL.

Titus Burgess (who, diehards will recall, originated the role of D’Fwan in 30 Rock) is set to play Kemper’s BFF.

Gawwwwww. I’m already planning my binge-watch. Praise the Cine-Gods that NBC has bought a series order.

And still under series-consideration from pilot season is the Amy Poehler-produced Old Soul, which would feature dramatic heavyweight Ellen Burstyn alongside goofausauras Fred Willard (while featuring a motley supporting cast of other familiars). Orange Is The New Black‘s Natasha Lyonne would be the center of the show, playing “a reformed wild child…who has a business caring for the elderly and feels she has more in common with her colorful old clients than she does with people her age.” Please-oh-please, TV — pick this one up.

Let the new reign of giggles begin.
