The First Gay “Bachelor” Has a Few Glitches

by Brenda Pitt

With the exception of that one time a bisexual female contestant flirted with a woman she found attractive, ABC’s The Bachelor oozes heteronormativity. We all know the drill: conventionally attractive man is wooed by 25 nearly-identical women, chooses his favorite one and proposes to her. If we turn a blind eye to the overnight dates, it’s all quite conservative. Sure, there are other dating shows that are less limited and exclusionary, but those series are more likely to be labeled as “trashy.” Disappointingly, there has never been a gay bachelor.

UNTIL NOW. In a hilarious and spot-on Funny or Die video, Jesse Tyler Ferguson stars as Bryden, a shy and adorable Bachelor, eagerly awaiting the arrival of his prospective husbands. But for poor Bryden, the show doesn’t quite go as planned. Oh, and George Takei replaces Chris Harrison as host… and it’s fantastic. Take a look at the super charming video below!
