The Creator Economy Needs More Women, And Vice Versa — Here’s Everything You Need To Know Before Diving Into The Market

by BUST Magazine

Women getting paid less than men who do the same job is a tale as old as time, but, thanks to the creator economy, that might be about to change.

In the past couple of years, we have shifted how we work. It’s clear now that a traditional corporate job isn’t the only way to make a living, and a 9-5 job has been proven not to be the best career investment for women —a recent report by McKinsey & Company showed that, in 2021, for every 100 men that were promoted from entry-level roles to manager positions, only 87 women were.

Given the fact that women, especially working moms, are often required to juggle a lot of responsibilities at once, many of them are looking for careers that allow them to work from home due to the increased flexibility they afford. With fewer time and geographical constraints, the creator economy is an appealing space for women to develop their careers. In fact, moms make up about 30% of the creator economy, including women such as Madison Miller, a mom creator with more than 210K followers on Youtube. Similarly, more than 25% of TikTok users are moms, according to Gugu Guru.

Izea, an influencer marketing and research firm, released a report on equality in the creator economy and found that while 83% of influencer marketing deals in 2021 went to female creators, only 15% went to males.  Izea also found women creators across most platforms made $962 per story while men made $609. This is clearly a result of women’s much higher engagement rates, indicating that the more engaging their content is, the more they earn. It is fair to say the creator economy promises a gender-inclusive society in which the pay gap is gradually closing.

To dive into this lucrative yet highly competitive market, you need to get started with a platform that allows you to create and share content. Wondershare, the global leader in software development, is dedicated to empowering female creators of all ages, backgrounds and diversities with a great selection of creative tools and a platform to share, such as the Claim Your Space Campaign.  By creating content that represents themselves, participants will empower each other through collective celebration, amplifying their voices and financial support.

“Here’s a beautiful idea,” said Shaan Jahagirdar, Chief Design Officer of Wondershare, “stories of women thriving in the community. These stories are what people are drawn to, what they connect with. This campaign is intended to encourage and empower individuals to be confident enough to express who they are anywhere in the world, and at all times.”

To participate in the campaign, make a video or photo that shows your day-to-day victories. It could be anything that makes you a better version of yourself, for example, your work routine, an activity that you are passionate about, or a performance of your talent.  Then, share it on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter or YouTube with the hashtags #ClaimYourSpace and #WonderSpace and tag @Wondershare and two friends in the post.

The five participants who are selected as sharing the most inspiring content will be awarded a $200 Empowerment Fund respectively to do with whatever they want, and will be featured on Wondershare’s social channels and website to receive the recognition they deserve. In addition, for every story shared, Wondershare will donate $5 to Step up Women’s Network—which supports young women through mentorship programs—and Dress for Success which provides a network of support, professional attire, and development tools to help women thrive in work and life.

“Wondershare products encompass the freedom of creative expression,” says Jahagirdar. “They are the resources you need for your individual or your business brand. Whether you are producing stories, reels or long-format videos, Wondershare can provide users with the tools to create creative content with ease.”
