The documentary ‘Shouting Fire: Stories from the Edge of Free Speech’ by father-daughter pair Martin and Liz Garbus will air on HBO starting June 29th. In it, Emmy-winning documentarian Liz Garbus, with the help of her First Amendment attorney father, explores the limits put on free speech in a post-9/11 world.Â
Among the people interviewed are Debbie Almontaser, who was forced to resign as principal of Khalil Gibran International Academy, an Arabic-English public school in New York City, after explaining the definition of a controversial word, ‘Intifada’, in the New York Post. Garbus also examines Ruth Benn and Ed Hedemann, protesters who were arrested during a nonviolent protest during the 2004 Republican National Convention. Then there’s Chase Harper, who wore a ‘Homosexuality is Shameful’ t-shirt during a gay and lesbian event at his high school in San Diego and was subsequently suspended.
Along with its airing on June 29th (9:00 to 10:15 PM ET/PT), the documentary also airs on July 1 (9:30 AM/Midnight), July 5 (2:30 PM), July 7 (9:45 PM), July 11 (9:30 AM), and July 17 (3 PM).
