The Abortion Drone Makes Its First Flight to Poland

by Alice Lawton

This Saturday will be the Abortion Drone‘s first flight ever. The drone is a collaboration between a number of organizations, including Women on Waves, to provide abortions to women in countries where it is illegal. This isn’t Women on Waves‘s first time helping women in abortion-restrictive companies: Previously, they sailed around the world.

The first trip of the Abortion Drone will be from Germany to Poland. Poland is one of the few countries in Europe where abortion is still illegal. You can only get an abortion in cases of rape, incest, or if there is potential danger to the woman or the baby. Even then, however, it is very hard to get an abortion.

Germany has one of the lowest abortions rates in the world. If Poland’s rates matched Germany, there would be an estimated 48,000 underground abortions happening every year. In reality, the estimation of abortions each year in Poland is a whopping 240,000, despite only 744 being reported officially.

The abortion drone will carry pills such as mifepristone and misoprostol, which mimic a spontaneous miscarriage. Women wouldn’t get in trouble for taking the pills—you can’t subject a woman to punishment for having an illegal abortion in Poland.

A loophole like this will help many women. In 2008, an estimated 47,000 women died from unsafe abortions. Hopefully, everything goes as planned with the Abortion Drone and it is able to make future trips to aid women with safer at-home abortions.
