Recently starting its second season, Broad City has managed to captivate audiences with its outrageous sketches, hilarious guests, and all around feel good vibe. Creators Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson are magnetic, and though they are blowing up big these days, they come from a humble place. “During the webseries we were never viral. It was always just the quality of viewers,” said Ilana Glazer in an interview in which she and Jacobson talked about the journey from web show to full on television.
Now, webseries are sprouting up all over the place, and we have a round up of quality shows you should be keeping an eye on…some have big plans ahead:
1. Smart Girls At The Party
The only kind of party we ever want to go to is one where Amy Poehler makes us feel good. That’s exactly what you’ll find with Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls At The Party, a community for young girls and women to engage, communicate, and get some killer advice from Amy herself every now and then. The webseries has won a Webby and was recognized at SXSWeducation and Common Sense Media for its inspiring content!
2. The Mis-Adventures of Awkward Black Girl
This comedy webseries is one to watch out for—into her second season of her online show, Issa Rae is looking ahead to big things, including her new book (available now) and upcoming HBO show. With her first person narrative and voice over work, audiences can jump right into the mind of Rae and experience each and every awkward moment.
3. High Maintenance
High Maintenance has been getting plenty of buzz since its first season appeared in 2012. The married writers, Katja Blichfeld and Ben Sinclair, wanted to make something outside of the typical “stoner show,” so they played off of their real life successes and friends, who all happen to smoke weed. So it’s not so shocking a show about a weed delivery guy was born. But what’s impressive is that it has become the staff pick of Vimeo, and proves to be a big-time crowd-pleaser. Give it a watch; you won’t be sorry.
4. F To 7th
Ingrid is in the midst of her “descent into pre-middle age” life and the comedy webseries depicts it all with a dull, awkward humor that kills. Nominated for a Writers Guild Award, F to 7th explores all the right questions people have when trying to find themselves, and it just so happens that most of the experiences you see on the show are ones creator Ingrid Jungermann has been dealing with in her own life. Check it out and prepare to relate.
5. Braless
Launching its first ever YouTube channel with original programming, MTV has taken on sex vlogger, Laci Green in this new webseries, Braless. The burst of energy Green brings to the screen is awesome, and in her very first episode she tackles the ever-confusing-but-not-that-hard-once-you-actually-know-what-it-means-definition of “feminist.” Get into this show with your bra off and nipples free, people!
6. All Over It
With sweet voiceover work and appearances by H. Jon Benjamin, this webseries about the creatives of Fishtown is a quirky artistic shit show where five people live together in the above building as a creative collective trying to sell themselves without selling themselves. As the beginning intro states in the smooth Bob’s Burgers/Archer voice we all know and love, “Creative people live here. They work here on creative things. Group creative things. Occasionally group creative things for money.”
