Tasseomancy – Ulalume

by Kelly McClure

Tasseomancy is a band based out of Canada that’s quickly bubbling to the top of the collective consciousness of this whole spooky, witchy, mystical thing that’s going on. If you haven’t noticed, forming musical projects that wax poetic about drafty castles, stagnant bogs, and cobwebs is trending in a big way (Check out Callie’s Witch House article in the newest issue of Bust for further examples.)

Sari and Romy Lightman, the twin sisters who formed this ethereal band (and who moonlight in the insanely amazing Austra) raised money for the production costs of their second album Ulalume by doing a Kickstarter project where they offered up services such as dream interpretations done via Skype, and burrito delivery by bicycle within the Toronto area where they live. They reached their financial goal with ease (obviously, I mean, who wouldn’t want burritos brought to them directly via bike) and the label Out of this Spark will be releasing it late this summer. Continuing the practice of offering special little secrets for their fans, the UK release of the album will be packaged as a download code mailed along with a candle and a scroll. Um. I want one.

The Lightman twins have really fined tuned how to meld their whispery, eerie harmonies into a fuller sound than what they introduced in their previous outfit, Ghost Bees. Songs like “Diana” and “The Darkness of Things” truly come across as otherworldly. I felt like a real frump dump listening to them in my sweatpants the other night, and mentally whisked myself away to a creepier and much more sophisticated location.
